This thoughtful novel, set during World War I, deals with the phenomenon of perception influenced by prejudice, as it follows the European travels of an American jeweller. Unfortunately, the book’s undoubted power was undermined – and its sales doomed – by the author’s choice of name for the main character: Cocker Dingleberry.
